Profile ~ Presidents ~

The first Road Safety Committee was established in Bangor, Co.Down in January 1948. By 1956 an Association of Road Safety Committees was formed. In June 1960, a RoSPA (NI) office was opened, and was financed by Central Government. The Road Safety Council of Northern Ireland was formed in Newcastle, Co. Down in September 1963.

The Council and Committees supported many successful road safety initiatives over the years including:

• Evidential Breath-Testing for Drink-Driving
• "R" Plates for Inexperienced Drivers
• Road Safety Teaching Calendar
• Establishment of Road Safety Education Officer Service
• Approved Driving Instructors' Register
• Private Car Testing (MOT)
• National Speed Limits
• Compulsory Front Seat Belt Wearing
• Rear Seat Belts and Restraints for Children and Adults
• Stricter Drink-Drive Laws
• Dipped Headlights in Poor Visibility
• Speed Cameras and Penalty Points
• Enhanced Road Safety Media Campaigns
• Proposed Increase from 11 to 21 Road Safety Education Officers

As new road safety measures and campaigns are introduced in future, the Council and Committees will give continued support to help foster public acceptance.
